BBC News at Burdall’s Yard for The Grief Opera
“Whisper help, say help, sing help, SHOUT HELP”
On the 10th of September The Grief Opera graced Burdall’s Yard’s stage for World Suicide Prevention Day.
In collaboration with Suicide&Co the evening’s message was clear; if you are struggling with suicidal thoughts ask for help. The project started after the death of Nigel Linacre’s rock musician son, George. Partnering up with Vladimir Miller, a contemporary-music band leader, the pair craft an impressive range of music varying between opera and jazz, incorporating some of the last conversations between the father and son and some of George’s own bass rhythms. In their own words, “The Grief Opera shines a spotlight on suicide, the most common cause of death in young men, and the consequent, harrowing grief. Its creators hope it will enable people to have potentially life-saving conversations and to work with their grief.”
Before the performance itself BBC Points West visited Burdalls Yard to catch up with Nigel and further carry the message and importance of World Suicide Prevention Day - please see video below.
A knockout 2nd Birthday weekend at Burdall’s Yard
On Friday 1st and Saturday 2nd March Burdall’s Yard celebrated two years of operation with two fantastic nights of comedy.
On the Friday evening, in the presence of The Right Worshipful The Mayor of Bath Cllr. Dine Romero, we welcomed Instant Wit to Burdall’s Yard for a hilarious night of improv comedy, largely inspired by audience requests.
On her X account, The Mayor said: “Having a blast with @InstantWit … Celebrating 2nd birthday of Burdall’s Yard @burdallsyard_”
The audience at Burdall’s were carried along on waves of laughter as this amazingly talented and versatile troupe gave us impressions, songs, cod-Shakespeare, rhyming verse and physicality - all thought up on the spur of the moment with inspiration and ingenuity. We can’t wait to welcome them back!
We had only just had time to draw breath before on Saturday 2nd March we welcomed TV comedy star Stephen Bailey (who has been on the likes of Live at The Apollo and Would I Lie to You?) to the Main Stage. It was a sell-out show with a lively audience and Stephen was a joy to work with. On his Instagram story he wrote:
“What a night! Thank you Ann, Lucas and Martin and the team @burdallsyard_ for having me tonight - amazing venue you should all check out!!”
Stephen was supported by the hilarious Louise Leigh, whose award-winning act delighted the Burdall’s Yard audience.
All-in-all, two great nights consolidating the increasingly important role Burdall’s Yard is playing in the local community and in the Bath comedy scene.
Bath MP hosts Q&A for locals at Burdall’s Yard

On Tuesday 13th February residents of the Walcot and Lambridge areas took to Burdall’s Yard to meet Bath MP Wera Hobhouse and discuss issues that matter to their communities in the hopes of providing those issues with a platform in parliament.
On her X (formerly Twitter) account, Wera posted:
”It was a pleasure to chat with Walcot and Lambridge residents last night and hear their thoughts on the issues that matter most to them. Conversations like these are vital for driving my work in Parliament.”
This event demonstrated the venue’s capacity to enrich the local community with opportunities to come together and make their voices heard, and we hope to have the ability to continue providing these types of services.
A big thank you to everybody who turned out and we look forward to meeting more members of the local community at future events to discuss the bigger picture of our beautiful city.
Young Bath Artists exhibition opens its doors to all.
In a first for the city, secondary schools from across Bath are excited to present a collaborative exhibition of GCSE and A level Art and Photography work which will be on display at Burdall’s Yard for 2 weeks: 12th November – 25th November.
This is the first iteration of this project, with teachers from art departments from Bath schools working together to curate this vibrant, colourful, and inspiring exhibition. Artwork is curated thematically, rather than grouped by school, remaining in line with the collaborative nature of this project.
The teachers decided that Next Stage Theatre Company’s attractive venue: Burdall's Yard would be the perfect space in which to exhibit the work of their budding artists and with over 100 artworks on display, the exhibition truly celebrates the imagination and creativity of young artists from Bath.
On Saturday 11th November, Burdall's hosted a private view for the exhibition, opened by Director of The Holburne Museum, Dr. Chris Stephens. Students, friends, families, and teachers from across the schools all came together to celebrate these young artists’ achievements. Dr Stephens congratulated all the young artists on the quality and imaginative range of their work. He thanked all the staff who had had the idea for such a display and for making it happen. He said that he very much hoped this would be the first of many such exhibitions.
Ann Ellison BEM, Artistic Director of Burdall’s Yard, said on Saturday: “I am absolutely thrilled to have the Bath Young Artists’ exhibition on-show at Burdall’s Yard. Having taught in local secondary schools throughout my teaching career, I am very well-aware of the wealth of talent there is amongst the city’s young students. I am delighted that we can celebrate such talent at Burdall’s Yard and must thank and congratulate all the staff who have worked so hard in the last weeks. Curating and hanging over 100 pieces of artwork is no mean feat and yet they achieved this with inspiration and flair. I do hope as many people as possible will come to Burdall’s Yard in the next two weeks to marvel at, and enjoy this extraordinary display of art.”
The work will be on show for two weeks until Saturday 25th November. Please come and enjoy the breadth of artistic talent on display.
Tuesday 14th to Saturday 18th November, 10.30am to 5.30pm

Summer Workshops by The Art Cohort
Last week we were thrilled to host The Art Cohort for two days of sold out children’s summer holiday art workshops. As a new venue for The Art Cohort and their August programme it was wonderful to see the building buzzing with creativity and young people from our community.
Inspired by legendary artists Picasso and Andy Warhol, the participants threw themselves into the activity, getting messy, getting creative and having fun, learning from the artists’ works of art, practice and techniques to influence their own art-making styles.
At the beginning of the week, taking inspirtation from artist Pablo Picasso, those attending used paint and multi-media, a range of tools and techniques to explore colour, shapes, faces and generally get surreal(ist)! Later in the week the participants dived into the world of Andy Warhol and the Pop Art movement, exploring Warhol-esque representations of 1960s celebrity culture. Being bold with colour and iconography!
We hope to continue working with The Art Cohort in the future, to nurture creativity and emerging talent across a range of artistic mediums as they look to deliver a stimulating, engaging programme to the Bath audience.
Check out their brilliant creations…

Happy 1st Birthday Burdall’s Yard!
We’ve got lots to celebrate… one year ago on March 1st 2022 we held the official opening of Burdall’s Yard.
Next Stage Theatre Company had seen that the space would be a perfect partner venue for The Mission Theatre, Next Stage’s intimate and popular theatre created by the company 18 years ago from a 250 year old chapel in Corn Street. Wanting to expand their community outreach Ann and Andrew Ellison - Next Stage’s directors – were delighted to acquire the lease to Burdall’s in September 2021. In the last 12 months they, and Next Stage, have been delighted to see Burdall’s Yard transformed into a vibrant artistic hub for the local community along the London Road, Bath.
It feels like a long time since we were rushing around trying to get everything clean, organised and in place for our first artists and audiences who arrived at Burdall’s Yard in March 2022. It’s been exciting to see the venue grow from strength to strength since opening.
Appealing to a wide-ranging creative community in Bath and beyond, Burdall’s Yard has become a space that is open to people of all generations and backgrounds to learn, laugh and be together. Our attractive, vaulted spaces are available for work and community use, and, in the last year have hosted a wide range of conferences, classes, drama practitioners and workshop leaders who meet in the various spaces on a regular basis. Burdall’s Yard is keen to support everyone in Bath in whatever way they can, sharing this unique building with as many people as possible.
In the past year Burdall’s Yard has celebrated the work of many visual artists, who have provided a vibrant and varied programme of exhibitions, featuring contemporary and innovative work. Free to exhibit - local and regional artists have welcomed this new addition to exhibition space within the city. Burdall’s Yard Main Stage has hosted over 75 lives events, including music gigs, recitals, comedy nights, talks, theatre performances and poetry.
In September 2022 Burdall’s Yard teamed up with Always Sunday and Town+House to create a brand new café and bar area, Play+House. Play+House is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm (winter opening hours) and serves a range of hot and cold beverages with ciders and craft beers sourced from local suppliers and a brand new food menu launched for 2023. It’s the perfect spot to take in the current exhibition, read a book, catch up with friends or hang out before a class or show, and is the beating heart of Burdall’s Yard.
It’s been a difficult period for lots of people, and a testing time for venues, and the whole live performance industry. But Burdall’s Yard has been a constant bright spot amid the gloom. Having successfully launched, we want to continue that momentum with the venue as well as look at plans for the future. We would encourage everyone to check out Burdall’s Yard, buy a ticket to a show, have a great night out with friends, pop in for a tea/coffee/lunch, check out an exhibition – so that everyone can contribute to this incredible venue, our unique hub of creativity in Bath.
Whether you are a returning vistor, or have yet to experience what’s on offer at Burdall’s Yard, we are ready to welcome you. We’re here to support the creative journeys of participants, audiences and artists. We’re excited for the year ahead. Come on in!
“A year ago everyone thought we were crazy trying to open a new arts’ venue post-pandemic and in a worsening economic climate. Of course it hasn’t been easy and everyone in the team has worked incredibly hard, often giving up hours of their own time, to facilitate events and look after visiting artists and performers. But 12 months on - Burdall’s Yard is now firmly established in the arts’ scene in Bath – a versatile, welcoming, attractive space unique in all it has to offer and becoming more popular and sought after by the day. Happy 1st Birthday Burdall’s Yard!”
Next Stage’s Artistic Director, Ann Ellison BEM
Emma Lacon: Gap In The Field
NEW exhibition showing at Burdall’s Yard from Tuesday 10 January to Friday 17 February 2023
Private View: Thursday 12 January, 5pm to 9pm - you are invited to join Emma for the exhibition’s Private View
Creating large semi-abstract paintings in acrylic, pen and ink, Emma paints instinctively and is inspired by the natural world, drawing upon surroundings of the Wiltshire countryside and a love of the Devon coast line. From a starting point of chaotic abstract marks Emma works with her paintings to eventually create a scene of solitude. Trying not to think too hard about the end painting, constantly removing and adding brush strokes, Emma's paintings are experimental and can often change direction…
Emma Says: “From an early age I would spend hours drawing and art became a favourite subject, leading me to do a foundation course at Plymouth Art College and then on to a degree in Illustration at the University of Humberside. My work at this time was small and very detailed, but I always had a love for colour and textures. After university I spent some time in London with the odd design and Illustration jobs, however life seemed to get in the way and I ended up with a full time job to pay the rent. I then got married and moved to Dubai with my husband, and had three children. Life then seemed to revolve around being a mother and although the desire to paint didn’t disappear the opportunity never really seemed to be there.
My family and I moved to Wiltshire 10 years ago, and I set up a business with my husband, which was a challenge but rewarding. There always seemed to be something missing… I suddenly got an over welcoming desire to paint again, and in my kitchen at home I picked up a paint brush and started splashing colour on a canvas once more! I struggled at first and wasn’t sure what I was trying to achieve, I had forgotten how to paint. I kept going and it began to come back to me. I did some life drawing and a painting course, and I remember the feeling of walking back into a studio, the familiar smell made me smile and feel at home. I learnt to let go and my painting style changed. I think a larger format helped this, as it seemed almost impossible to go back to the small detailed pictures I used to paint.
I began to build up a collection of work and then I sold some which gave me the belief that I might be able to do this! I made the decision to dedicate some time to it, taught myself to build a website, set up an Instagram account and most importantly found myself a studio, which above all gave me the literal space and the headspace to be creative.
I paint my pictures completely from my imagination with very little reference to life. They start as blocks of colours and child like drawings. I have never really been one for sketch books and my work seems to evolve on the canvas; it means there can be lots of painted over mistakes. I have begun to understand the process and now go with it, sometimes leaving the impression of a discarded picture to show through. I create marks which begin to make an image that has some sense, sometimes I make a mark, I will see something recognisable in it and it will completely change the direction of the painting. I paint out marks then paint them back in, I slip back into the fine detail of my past often, then turn the canvas upside down and paint them out leaving bits behind.
There is often conflict in my work and it can be a battle between painting fine detail and pulling it back with a can of spray paint. I push a painting until it suddenly takes on the transformation of a finished piece.
I have often thought about the meaning behind my work and what I want people to see in it. For a long time I didn’t think there was one, but I think they are trying to achieve a sense of peace, a place where you would like to be, a rest from reality.”
Ride the Change
On Thursday 3rd November Burdall’s Yard welcomed the team from Ride the Change, a collection of organizations and individuals cycling for climate justice. Last year they cycled from London to Glasgow for COP26 and it was a huge success! They had 175 riders complete the 500-mile cycle, raising 5,574 climate action pledges.
Building on this success, they did it again this year! This time they rode from South Wales to London, handing the COP baton over to Egypt ahead of COP27.
You can find out more on their website or in their Tour Pack for riders which has much more information in it and plenty of pictures from last year's ride.
In 2020, they merged with adventure touring company Brake the Cycle, market leaders in sustainable, boutique nature-inspired cycling holidays.
Brake the Cycle is a community for adventurous people looking to squeeze the most out of life in a way that doesn’t harm the planet. A community for people who love adventuring and the outdoors so much they don’t want to see it destroyed through climate change, plastic pollution and the loss of our wild spaces.
The Bridget Cassé Award for Excellence in Youth Theatre
Each year, the Next Stage Youth tutors nominate youth members for this prestigious award from which one individual is selected. Inaugurated in 2010, in memory of a talented Next Stage actress - Bridget Cassé - who had also been a Youth tutor.
The trophy is given to somebody who has shown theatrical talent, enthusiasm, a willingness to help out and a positive attitude towards fellow members. The Bridget Cassé trophy was awarded for the first time in 2010 to Philip Davies and the winners of the prestigious 2022 Bridget Casse Award for Excellence are Fin Hancorn and Miranda Webb.
Both young actors have shown outstanding flare onstage whilst also being friendly and helpful to other members of the company. They are both always happy to work in a team and enjoy new acting challenges.
Miranda’s credits include Lily in Living with Lady Macbeth in 2022 and Young Esme in Arrivals and Departures working alongside the adult company in 2022.
Fin’s credits include Callum in Noughts and Crosses in 2021 and Nick in Four Minutes Twelve Seconds working alongside the adult company in 2022
Runner up, Sophia Punt, was a very close contender for the trophy this year due to her excellence in acting and her contribution to the youth theatre. A friendly and popular member of the group Sophia gave a memorable performance as Monica in the youth production of Living with Lady Macbeth.
Dara Tiernan deserves the highly commended certificate as someone who has been a friendly and talented member of the company. In the 2022 production of Living with Lady Macbeth, Dara played Gail and she showed her brilliant acting skills when performing her skydiving scene.

The Official Opening of Burdall’s Yard
On the 1st March 2022 Next Stage Theatre Company welcomed over 90 guests to the official opening of Burdall’s Yard (BY) - Bath’s brand new Community Centre and Arts Hub
Previously a brewery and a night club the attractive stone-vaulted venue had stood empty for nearly 2 years. When Ann and Andrew Ellison heard that it was available they immediately started discussions with Simon and Julian Emery - the owners - to negotiate a long lease on the building. The agreement was made in summer 2020 but with Covid lockdowns affecting all walks of life it was not until September 2021 that Next Stage finally got the keys. Since then the company has worked tirelessly to create its second performance space in Bath, having set up and opened The Mission Theatre in January 2005. Almost 17years later to the day, Burdall’s Yard started welcoming performers and classes from January 2022.
However it was Tuesday March 1st that marked the official opening of BY with Ann Ellison BEM, Artistic Director of Next Stage Theatre Company, Andrew Ellison Company Director, Brian Elwell the Gallery Director at Burdall’s Yard and Becca Jefferis the Venue Manager welcoming The Right Worshipful Mayor of Bath Cllr June Player at 7.45pm.
Guests drawn from the arts scene in Bath, the council and Friends and Patrons of Next Stage Theatre Company included Andrew Fletcher OBE, Simon Emery - owner of Burdall’s Yard - Wendy Matthews the Director of Bath Fringe and Estelle Ablett, an art critic.
An inaugural art exhibition curated by Brian Elwell and featuring many impressive paintings from his series: Making Ideas Visible was at the heart of the evening’s events. Guests enjoyed studying the works and chatting to Brian in the attractive bar area at Burdall’s Yard.
During the evening Walcot State Choir, under the leadership of Su Hart, provided a series of mini-concerts. The Choir hire Burdall’s every Tuesday evening for their weekly sessions and enjoy the welcoming space and good acoustics in the Main Stage area.
After Ann Ellison BEM had welcomed all the guests Madam Mayor declared Burdall’s Yard officially open and a selection of buffet snacks were served.
Walcot State Choir enjoy jolly social at Burdall’s Yard
We were thrilled to welcome Walcot State Choir to Burdall’s Yard for their Christmas Social. The venue was festooned with decorative bunting and the choir came dressed in sparkly outfits to celebrate the season together in the bar/café.
We hope that the Choir enjoyed the event as much as we did and we look forward to welcoming back to Burdall’s Yard again for more of their socials, as well as their regular sessions.
